Official Event Report: The Billo Memorial 2024

Event Overview
The Billo Memorial 2024 was held on the 7th and 8th of December at the Newcastle SSAA Range, near Seaham, NSW. This annual event honors the legacy of Billo while celebrating the skill and precision of Australia’s top benchrest shooters. The two-day event featured centrefire and rimfire heavy score competitions, culminating in the prestigious Two-Gun Aggregate Title.

Event Format

Centrefire Heavy Score (Day 1):
Distances: 100 yards and 200 yards.
Tested shooters’ accuracy and consistency under variable conditions.

Rimfire Heavy Score (Day 2):
Distances: 50 yards and 100 yards.
Highlighted precision shooting, particularly during the challenging Sunday afternoon session, marked by very windy and difficult conditions.

Two-Gun Aggregate:
Combined scores from both disciplines determined the aggregate champion.

Extreme Conditions competitors battled through extremely challenging weather conditions over the weekend. Temperatures soared to a scorching 35 degrees Celsius, testing their endurance and focus. On Sunday afternoon, strong winds added another layer of difficulty, making this event a true test of skill and perseverance.

The competition saw remarkable performances across both days, despite the extreme conditions.

Centrefire Yardage Winners:
100 Yards: Rod Richardson
200 Yards: Michael Thompson

Centrefire Aggregate Winner:
Michael Thompson: 499.26

Rimfire Yardage Winners:
50 Yards: Murray Hicks
100 Yards: Jan Mitchell

Rimfire Aggregate Winner:
Jan Mitchell: 495.15

Two-Gun Aggregate Winners:
1. Michael Thompson: 987.41
2. Andrew Dunn: 985.27
3. Bill Jupp: 982.30

 

Event Highlights

Day one began with the centrefire events, where Rod Richardson claimed victory at 100 yards, and Michael Thompson dominated at 200 yards, securing the centrefire aggregate title. On day two, rimfire shooters faced tough conditions, with Murray Hicks excelling at 50 yards and Jan Mitchell delivering a strong performance at 100 yards to secure the rimfire aggregate title.
The extreme heat and afternoon winds added significant challenges, yet competitors displayed extraordinary skill and determination, producing scores that reflected their dedication to the sport.
