Let's talk about Moly coating bullets versus clean skins, is there really a benefit with Moly in regard to barrel life?

I have used both options and have found a few differences.

I find when using Moly it’s can be difficult in judging the cleanliness of you barrel during a competition.

I think a lot depends on the type of cleaners used and the method.

After speaking to a few shooters over time I have concluded that using water based cleaners can be problematic as moly chemicals does react to water .
I found having to use chemical cleaners with moly made it hard to determine wether I was just stripping the moly or removing carbon.

unless someone has done an independent test using both options with controlled testing criteria it would be hard to determine accurately which is the better option.

I think one shooter said that using moly aloud them to shoot with less cleaning .

it’s an great topic .I use both so I guess I sit on the fence in this case .

Something I would love to discuss is the sighter target to scoring target variations.

I have discussed this with a couple of shooters .

Mike Ratigan in his book brings the topic up and Speedy Gonzalez in a U tube episode also brings up the topic.

When going to the central sighter target and then to the scoring target I have noticed a variation.

do others experience this issue and if so what can cause it ?

Ok Moly coating is a great topic Michael and there are plenty of opinions out there if it is worth the effort or not. I moly coat everything from hunting rifles, short range bench rest, 500m fly, NRAA large bore.

The process i use is wet molying which I will put some photo's up once we get a tech page set up I think it is coming soon.

Moly coating:

These are the facts I have found using it for the last 20 years.

You don't have to clean barrels as much- as an example in the 500m fly i will shoot 50 centre fire rounds without cleaning.

Barrel life is extended my last 308 palmer barrel was out at 6734 rounds. My LV has just clocked over 3200 rounds, and HV 1900 and these will be shot this year at the nationals.

Moly allows you to put more powder in your case for % of load capacity without putting pressure through the roof.

As for cleaning - personally there is whole topic just on cleaning. When I clean a barrel I am not looking at the patch rather I am feeling the patch moving down the bore. Fouling can be felt when you push the patch through the barrel.

At short range matches if anyone says their barrel is perfectly clean thats great, then look down the barrel with a bore scope you will be surprised.

I am confident that shooting in the unlimited class moly coating is an advantage when you are posting 10 shot groups.

I am sure others have opinions on this as well.

Cheers to all

Les
